In December 2018, the Immigration, Refugees Citizenship Canada's IRCC Marketing and Media Department launched an innovative campgn titled '#ImmigrationMatters', med at fostering a positive perception of immigration in society through factual communication, compelling , and partnerships outside traditional channels. This campgn is based on data collected over 25 years from annual surveys conducted by IRCC and feedback gathered from diverse communities across the country.
The three key pillars of this impactful campgn are:
Fact-based Communication: Highlighting statistics that illustrate immigrants' substantial contributions to Canada.
Storytelling: Sharing narratives that exemplify how immigrants make a tangible difference in their new communities.
Non-traditional Partnerships: Collaborating with organizations and individuals not typically associated with immigration initiatives.
The campgn showcases examples of remarkable individuals who have leveraged their skills to improve Canadian society:
Javier Bravo, originally from Mexico City, has created an online platform where users can gift certificates redeemable at businesses in Peterborough. This initiative boosts the local economy by encouraging consumers and supporting local enterprises.
Igor Bjelac, a Serbian immigrant based in Vancouver, organizes groups of volunteers to gather unsold food for those in need. This effort not only alleviates hunger but also reduces food waste, demonstrating how immigrants can foster social cohesion.
Roshni Bahl, who grew up in India and understands senior care well, contributes significantly to Canada's healthcare sector by providing quality elderly care. Her experience showcases the diverse talents that immigrants bring to Canadian society.
The campgn’s website offers a wealth of information on the workings of Canada’s immigration system for both citizens and newcomers alike. Notable facts include:
Economic Contribution: The strength of Canada's labor market relies partly on its immigrant population, especially as the national population ages and has fewer children than before.
Healthcare Impact: Immigrants like refugees in Vancouver pay more into healthcare systems than they use, known as the healthy immigrant effect. This benefits Canada’s public health infrastructure.
Social Involvement: Over one-third of immigrants volunteer or are part of social organizations. As integration increases, their desire to contribute to society also grows; Statistics Canada reports that those fully involved in local networks and community activities t to have more neighbors they know well and trust.
Finally, it's worth noting the remarkable rate at which immigrants integrate into Canadian society: approximately 85 become citizens after passing a test on Canadian history and their responsibilities and rights as citizens. This high naturalization rate underscores Canada’s inclusive immigration policies.
We encourage you to explore the campgn website for more compelling stories and facts, and share your experiences about why #ImmigrantsMatters through social media platforms. Together, we can build a narrative that celebrates the contributions immigrants make towards Canada's vibrant society.
