New Open Work Permit Policy for Hong Kong Residents in Canada
Starting on May 27, 2024, the Government of Canada has introduced a new public policy which grants open work permits to certn Hong Kong residents currently residing in Canada. This innovative move applies specifically to individuals who have applied for permanent residence under two designated streams within the temporary public policy framework.
The first stream, known as Stream A, is designed for Canadian graduates with recent degrees from post-secondary institutions recognized by the government. The second stream, Stream B, targets those who possess valuable work experience in Canada gned over at least one year.
Eligibility criteria stipulate that applicants must have held a valid study or work permit for a period of three years immediately preceding their permanent residence application submission date. This new policy is effective for an initial five-year duration and ensures the extension of temporary status in Canada while permanent residence applications are being processed.
The intention behind this public policy shift is to provide flexibility and security to Hong Kong residents wishing to ext their stay in Canada during a critical phase of their immigration process. It underscores Canada's commitment as a welcoming nation for people from Hong Kong, sharing deep historical ties with the region.
Mntning Legal Status in Canada
It is crucial for individuals holding temporary status or their depents to understand and adhere to their obligations regarding mntning legal status throughout this period. If an individual applies for the renewal of their work or study permit while it's still valid within 90 days before expiration, they will continue to have legal status until a decision on their application is madea process known as mntned status.
Restoration of Temporary Status and Open Work Permit Eligibility
Under public policy guidelines, applicants who let their temporary status expire within the last 90 days prior to applying for an open work permit may restore their status and concurrently apply for the permit. However, if their temporary status expires more than 90 days before they seek a new open work permit, their application will not be processed.
