At the of 2018, the Marketing and Media Department of Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada IRCC launched an impactful campgn named #ImmigrationMatters, med at fostering a positive perception among the public about immigration through factual communication. This initiative drew upon years of annual surveys conducted by IRCC and focused group discussions with diverse community members across the nation.
The campgn's pillars were centered around presenting fact-based information, utilizing compelling , and forging unconventional partnerships to highlight immigrants' contributions that make Canada a better place for everyone. Notable examples include Javier Bravo from Mexico City, who established an online platform enabling gift certificate donations benefiting Peterborough businesses; Igor Bjelac, a Serbian immigrant whose initiative with fellow volunteers in Vancouver gathers unsold food destined for those in need; and Roshni Bahl, an Indian-origin individual well-versed in caring for seniors.
The campgn's website provides detled information on the stories across Canada, the workings of Canada's immigration system, as well as its track record. It showcases how immigrants' contributions are significant to Canadian society:
Economic Contribution: The Canadian economy relies heavily on a robust labor force whose productivity is bolstered by the influx of immigrants. As the population ages and has fewer children compared to previous years, this influx helps sustn the economy. Top occupations under Canada's Express Entry program that are encouraged for immigration include software engineers, information systems analysts, computer programmers, financial auditors and accountants, as well as advertising, marketing, and public relations professionals.
Healthcare Impact: Immigrants often contribute more to the health system than they consume in services. According to the Canadian Council for Refugees, refugees or refugee clmants typically invest around 10 of their healthcare costs back into Canada. This scenario reflects what is known as the healthy immigrant effect, where immigrants' healthier lifestyles lead to a reduced strn on public healthcare resources.
Integration and Social Contribution: Over one-third of immigrants in Canada engage in volunteering activities, with two-thirds being part of social organizations. Their level of involvement often correlates with their sense of community integration: those who are deeply connected with local networks and participate in community activities like religious practices, t to have more acquntances among neighborhood residents, exhibit higher levels of trust towards neighbors, and volunteer frequently.
The synergy between Canada's immigration system and a strong feeling of belonging results in an impressive rate of nearly 85 of immigrants becoming Canadian citizens after passing tests on the nation's history and their responsibilities and rights as citizens one of the highest naturalization rates globally.
We encourage you to visit the campgn website for more stories and facts, and to share your own experiences online using the hashtag #ImmigrantsMatters, highlighting why immigration matters in Canada.
