Government of British Columbia Expands Multi-Language Support and Services for Newcomers

In response to the needs identified during the election period, the British Columbia government has increased its support for newcomers by quadrupling annual funding from $6 million to $25.6 million per year, making it the largest investment in newcomer services in the province's history.

As of April 1, 2024, a new and expanded program will offer more comprehensive support as newcomers settle into their communities, practice English skills, and secure employment. The Safe Haven program targets refugee clmants and others in vulnerable situations by providing specialized services like trauma counseling, assistance with housing search, and English language instruction.

This significant investment includes $13.4 million through the new BC Newcomer Services Program and $12.2 million via the Safe Haven initiative. These new programs are expected to serve over 40,000 individuals annually compared to the previous year's figure of approximately 26,000.

Service BC, British Columbia’s one-stop hub for government services, now offers 11 essential services in simplified and traditional Chinese, Punjabi, and French languages, along with interpreters supporting over 220 languages. These services m to provide newcomers with -to- support in their language of choice, ensuring they navigate the complexities of settling into a new community more effectively.

Furthermore, an online multi-language resources website will be launched on April 1st to help newcomers access key government services and programs like starting life in B.C., finding settlement services, accessing community amenities, and understanding the rights and concerns of Indigenous Peoples.

The BC Newcomer Services Program provide quality, culturally sensitive care tlored for diverse clients. It complements the local efforts made by grassroots organizations such as Langley Community Services Society LCSS, which has over 50 years of experience in addressing social and economic challenges.
